For the blind living in London and other parts of the UK, there are several organizations that are devoted to their needs. One of these is BlindAid. It is one of those organizations that have been around for many years. In fact, this society dates back to 1834. At that time it was known as the Indigent Blind Visiting Society.

The organization is involved in many different ways with those that are blind. They offer a variety of services.

Financial Aid

A common problem of the blind is to be poor. Not because they have chosen to be. But, because they are not able to find employment. The BlindAid organization has set up a Grants Program. Those that qualify for this money use it for a variety of different purposes. Most often it is to buy specialized equipment that makes life easier for them. It may be for talking microwaves or talking mobile phones which are just two examples.

Participating in the Community

BlindAid believes in making a presence in the community for the blind. They do this by implementing community projects. These are offered free to participants and run for short periods of time. They are comprised of different types of classes and workshops. They are geared towards meeting some of the needs that the blind may have challenges with. For example, it may be a Keep Fit project, or an Arts and Craft class. It allows those who are blind to come together and to discover that there are many things that they can do to gain their independence.

Visiting Homes

The home visit program operated by BlindAid is a very powerful segment of what they offer. They visit their members to help them with some of the needs they may have. One of the main purposes of this program is to ensure that those they visit come to know that they are not alone.
